Kitesurfing in waves or freeriding with a directional board continues to be one of the fastest growing kite disciplines.
With the Rev II this is something that seems almost impossible to perform. Anyone looking to up their game in the waves, or learn how to ride a directional board or foil, should consider one of these top performing wave kites. I really like the SS but.... First thing I found odd was there was no pump leash attachment on the kite, just the plastic clip to lock the valve.
They sit more forward in the wind window and have lots of depower and crisp and direct handling. The Naish Slash and Liquid Force Wow are two wave kites that both have amazing drift and balance in the waves, and are similar shapes with narrow leading edges and three strut frames. Their power, range and handling, drift capability and overall performance make theme great wave kites or just great kites in general.
The new Drifter has great low end power, that’s just shy of the Neo, size for size. Anyway, the wind went down a bit, so I thought that I should try my “new” 11m Slingshot Rev II from 2009.
Maybe the only thing that is OK with the Rev II is the construction. But Tabs are there and ready to help at anytime!
Compared to last year’s SST we found the 2020 to have a bit more progressive power delivery along the bar’s throw. The SB is very simple to start and land using a fixed point. Ultimately, wave kites are designed to have lots of complete depower, or the ability to turn off most of the kite’s pull.
Not only are you forced to steer the kite far beyond 12 to get enough lift, but the fact that power difference you can achieve by sheeting the bar out or in is far from enough to give you a good lift as well as catch the fall on your way down. It has the edge for jumping and hang time over the other two in this sub category. The bar feels like a big mess of lines and the rope that slides through the bar apperantly is a part that gets worn out, at least according to what the condition looked like on the bar I used, which hasn’t been used that much.
These kites also are designed to float and drift and not turn helmet down and lose flight as quickly as most freeride models. They both have narrow leading edges and light weight and well balanced, three strut frame. The wind was pretty good, about 8-10 m/s and I took a ride with my old 9m Cabrinha Crossbow from 2007. The SST can be fun for some jumping but it’s not the massive boosting or big hangtime kite you can find elsewhere in the Slingshot line. This is important when wave riding because you don’t want to get pulled off your board or out of the surfable section of the wave. It’s not as quick and aggressive as the Section or the Airush wave style kites, but it has smoother power delivery and the right pull and control through the turn that let the rider flow down the line. The forward setting gives a more freeride feel to the kite with better lift, lighter touch steering and even more depower. I am 96kg with a sexy Dad bod.
It’s not quite as quick and nimble or tight pivoting as some of the other kites in the group but its smooth control and pull through its pivot keeps the Drifter at the top of the leaderboard. In this round of head to head tests, the Kitesurfing Magazine test team caught some great sessions on the industry’s top wave models. The Drifter continues to be one of the best drifting kites down the line with great balance and less tendency to curl helmet down when the power comes off the lines. It can also change up bridle settings to make it a better jumping kite and equips the Neo to almost any freeride application.
What can I say… The design is nothing that affects the kites performance, but the design of the Rev II really is as boring as it could get, dull colors and cool textures. The Slash shows refinement in its second generation design and still offers the similar smooth and controlled power through its turn. If the previous SST had a narrower on/off spectrum of power delivery, the 2020 version seems to stretch this power more evenly over a longer length of throw and this might make power control a bit more intuitive for progressive kiters. Conclusion. To depower you must lock the rope in a steal-thing that obviously wears out the rope. The Core Section may have a bit more power in its delivery than the Airush Wave but both these kites are quick and responsive. Their longer and more squared wingtips give them really quick and reactive pivots and great direct handling and feedback from the flying lines. The Rev II sucks when it comes to jumping even if you manage to keep it steady at 12. The Drifter continues to be one of the best drifting kites down the line with great balance and less tendency to curl helmet down when the power comes off the lines. The SST has been my personal weapon of choice for the last 3 years.
The Click bar comes with a premium price but also adds premium performance to the wide wind range of the Neo.
Their pull comes from more of a central position of the canopy which lets them sit back in the wind window and deliver some silky smooth pull. The only thing I do not like is the below the bar trim. Very nice kite! Been kiting in the waves for 10 years give or take. The print of your original question is huge. I watched an online video and I'm sure the kite was started from an anchor point.
The refined and highly evolved performance of today’s top wave kites has helped push this evolution. One of the good things with the Rev II is that it turns very quickly, almost like a c-kite, but that is also in my opinion a drawback when you’re jumping, since the kite easily turns away from 12 o’clock and you end up crashing of landing hard when you don’t have control over the kite in the sky.
I like the Nomad flies a lot like my Wainmans well the way I have them set up. Check out the individual 2018 Surf Kite Reviews. The lift is poor and once you reach the peak in your jump you drop like a stone from the sky, resulting in hard impacts. Great range, amazing stability and float combine with crisp and efficient handling.
