I’ve read a few YA historical fiction novels set in Germany, such as. Have you read ‘Story of a Secret State’ by Jan Karski? It's not The Book Thief but it's still a great WWII fiction novel! Each one born of a different homeland; each one hunted, and haunted, by tragedy, lies…and war. So this story follows Joana, Emilia, Florian and Alfred -they all have their own POV. I had read one Ruta Sepetys book before, Out of the Easy, which I really enjoyed. It’s free and takes less than 10 seconds! Ruta Sepetys is a true master of words. I’m glad I finally picked it up though, it was so good -and in my opinion, completely worth the hype. which ons is better? You should definitely pick it up if you love historical fiction!! Only Alfred, stationed on the Gustloff, lacks sympathy; almost a caricature, he is self-delusional, unlikable, a Hitler worshiper. Salt to the Sea deals with difficult subject matter, taking place during the bloodiest conflict in human history, a conflict that created more than 50 million refugees, a number that would not be seen again until 2013. While the characters within Salt to the Sea are fictional creations, their journey, and the challenges they face, are well-representative of the struggles faced by real refugees everyday. The three sympathetic refugees and their motley companions (especially an orphaned boy and an elderly shoemaker) make it clear that while the Gustloff was a German ship full of German civilians and soldiers during World War II, its sinking was still a tragedy. I agree with your thoughts. It’s a Polish army officer’s account of WWII and it really brings home the idea that there are so many things we forget about what happened. And it was also a really realistic perspective that I'm sure lots of Nazi youths and soldiers shared as well. It’s told from different perspectives: a Prussian, a Polish girl, and so on.

Even now, my heart is swelling up with emotion as I think about how brave and strong they were in the face of danger and death.
This is a total gem!

But how could you not, right?! I am so into history – I am studying it at a higher level at school at the moment. So this story is set in the last year of WWII, in Germany. Themes related to immigration and young women’s taking charge of their lives don’t quite lift this awkwardly written volume above other royal romances. My recent post Review: Be With Me by J. Lynn.
